中国人之于姓名之外,还有一个“字”,这也是由来已久的。“字”不一定要有两个字。表字根据经典,似乎春秋时代就有了的,陈公子佗字五父,王引之以为是根据《诗经》“素丝五纶”之句,纥佗通,后代相习成风,于是名凤者字鸣岐,名琼者字子瑶之类,差不多看见了字就猜得着名。这种风俗,最近一二十年似乎消灭了。青年们往往只有姓名,没有表字,因此,他们也就不懂称呼上规矩,有一个高中学生写信给我,封面上写的是王了一,信内却称王力先生,但是,有一位朋友在某机关当秘书,同事却又劝他取一个表字,以便称呼。青年总是和社会打成两橛的,区区称呼一事也不在例外。
实际上,一个人有两个名字,在现代,不但没有好处,反而有坏处,常常有人知道我叫王力,还问我认识不认识王了一。这且不提。在北平的时候,有人寄钱给我,写的是王了一,我只有两个图章,其一是王力,另一个是了一,银行里不许我取款,因为前是姓合名不合,后者是名合而没有姓。结果是劝我花了一角钱在刻字摊上刻上一个木印,才算办清手续。
