全诗主要有四个意象:

一个是幻想(也是理想)意象,这就是姑娘。这是全诗的核心意象。

一个是比喻意象:丁香。这是美、高洁、愁怨三位一体的意象。(为什么用丁香而不用玫瑰、牡丹呢?)这个意象的选择,颇具匠心:

(1)恰切、生动、形象地烘托了核心意象“姑娘”(后面讲)。

(2)具有丰厚的文化内涵。这一意象巧妙地化用了中国传统诗词用来比喻愁苦、哀怨的意象。如唐代诗人李商隐《代赠》中的“芭蕉不展丁香结,同向春风各自愁。”

李璟《宛溪沙》“青鸟不传云外信,丁香空结雨中愁”。同时,这一意象与英国诗人艾略特诗集《荒原》中的经典意象“痛苦的丁香”在某些方面相合,是“荒原”上的理想、芬芳的显现。

一个是现实意象:雨巷。

一个是主体意象:我。

“比喻意象”与“现实意象”以“理想意象”和“主体意象”为中心设置。比喻意象“丁香”,象征地映显了姑娘的内在与外在美,也自然地表露了我的希望;现实意象“雨巷”,真实地显示了我的处境,也形象地表露了我的心境与思想。“姑娘”美在那里呢?“她是有/丁香一样的颜色,(外在美)/丁香一样的芬芳,(内在美。“芬芳”是一种气质,而气质是人的内在涵养的外在显现。是“装不出来的”。)/丁香一样的忧愁”。(内外结合的美。如“病西施”),“姑娘”的这种内在、外在统一的美,正是“我”的希望,正可抚慰“我”的灵魂与心境。

“我”的心境与思想是什么呢?从诗中看,是怅惘、凄凉、彷徨。
