As is shown in the picture, like a mountain, tradition can only be seen clearly from a distant place. In other words, tradition is a living part of today only when it is changed according to today’s taste.
Tradition is an essential part of our life. An example at hand is the Beijing Opera. Though it is beautiful and is greatly engrossing to most old people, it can hardly attract the present young generation. The operas still staged are mostly of old themes, outdated structure, slow rhythm and over-complicated music. Nearly everything is encoded like ancient language in which only archaeologists are interested. Nevertheless, if we embody something like feelings of modem people, the opera will continue to survive with its popularity growing into an ever-lasting glamour. In a word, the past is already gone. If there is anything left, that’s the spirit of the opera in expressing people’s life which is always changing.
That helps explain the fruitless efforts to introduce the Beijing Opera to the younger generation. The best, perhaps the only, approach to tradition is to strip it off the shabby clothes and put on，for instance, jeans or high-heeled shoes.
