也称为普通法系,与大陆法系相对的西文两大法系之一。随着英国殖民主义扩张,其法律也被带到这些地区,这些殖民地独立后,依然在不同程度上保持着英国法的传统和影响,继续采用英国法的某些原则和制度,作为这些国家法律制度的基础。在西文法学著作中通常把英国法和保持英国法传统的前英国殖民地、附属国的法律统称为英国法系或普通,以区别于保持罗马法传统的罗马日耳曼法系。
