当发生火灾或爆炸事故时,位于事故地点进风侧的人员,应迎着风流撤退,人员位于回风侧时,可佩戴自救器或湿毛巾,尽量通过捷径较快地绕到新鲜风流中去或顺风流撤退。如路线较长,爆炸波与火焰可能袭来时,则应向下卧倒或俯伏于水沟中,以减轻灼伤。遇到无法撤退(通路冒顶阻塞或有害气体含量大而又无自救器等)时,则应迅速进入预先筑好的或临时构筑的避难硐室,等待营救。

对于涌水事故,则应撤退到涌水地点上部水平,而不能进入涌水地点附近的独头巷道内。但也有这种情况,如独头上下部的惟一出口已被淹没无法撤退时,则可在独头工作面避难,以免受到涌水伤害。这是因为独头上山附近空气因水位上升逐渐受到压缩,能保持一定的空间和一定的空气量。如系上部采空区积水涌出,则必须在避难前快速构筑避灾硐室,以防被涌出的有害气体所伤害。
