  “我明白你会来,所以我等。”

  “当真等我?”

  “可不是,我看看天,雨快要落了,谁知道这雨要落多大多久,天又是黑的,我喊了五声,或者七声。我说,四狗,四狗,你是怎么啦!雨快要落了,不怕雷公打你么?全不曾回声。我以为你回家了。我又算……雨可真来了,这里树叶子响得怕人,我不怕,可只担心你。我知道你是不曾拿斗篷的。

  雨水可真大,我躲在那株大楠木下,就是那株楠木,我们俩……忘记了么?你装。我要问你到底打哪儿来,身上也不湿多少,头又是光的,我问你,躲到什么洞里。”

  四狗笑,四狗不答。他不说从家中来,她便明白的。

  他坐到那人身边去,挤拢去坐,垫座的是些桐木叶。

  这时雨已过前山,太阳复出了,还可以看前山成块成片的云,象追赶野猪,只飞奔。四狗坐处四围是虫声,是树木枝叶上积雨下滴的声音,头上是个棚,雨后太阳蒸得山头出热气,四狗头上却阴凉。头上虽凉心却热,四狗的腰被两只手围着了。

  “四狗,——”想说什么不及说,便打一声唿哨。

  因为对山有同伴,同伴这时正吹着口哨找人。

  同伴是在雨止以后又散在山头摘蕨菜,这时陪四狗坐的也是摘蕨人。

  在两人背后有一个背笼,是她的。四狗便回头扳那背笼看。

  “今天怎么只得这一点?……喔,花倒得了不少。还有莓咧,我正渴,让我吃莓吧。下了一阵雨,莓是洗淡了,这个可是雨前摘的?我喂你一颗,算我今天赔礼,不成吗?”

  “要你赔礼?我才……”

  她把围着四狗的腰的两只手放松了,去采地上的枯草。

  “我告你,我也总有一天要枯的,——一切也要枯,到八月九月,我总比你们枯得更早。”

  四狗莫名其妙,他说道:

  “我的天,我听不懂你的话。说什么枯不枯。”

  “我也不一定要你懂,你总有一天懂的。”

  “让我在这儿便懂,成不成?”

  “你要懂,就懂了,载不得我说。”她又想,“聋子耳边响大雷,没得用处。”就哧的笑了。

  四狗不再吃莓了,用手扳并排坐的人头。黑色的皮肤,红红的嘴,大大的眼睛与长长的眉毛。四狗这时重新来估价。鼻子小,耳朵大,下巴是尖的,这些地方四狗却放过了。他捏她辫子,辫子是在先盘在头上,像一盘乌梢蛇,这时这蛇挂在背后了,四狗不怕蛇咬人,从头捏至尾。

  “你少野点。”说了却并不回头。
