①所谓热污染，是指现代工业生产和生活中排放的废热所造成的环境污染。热污染可以污染大气和水体。火力发电厂、核电站和钢铁厂的冷却系统排出的热水，以及石油、化工、造纸等工厂排出的生产性废水中均含有大量废热。这些废热排入地面水体之后，能使水温升高。在工业发达的美国，每天所排放的冷却用水达4．5亿立方米，接近全国用水量的1／3；废热水含热量约2500亿千卡，足够2．5亿立方米的水温升高10℃。

②热污染首当其冲的受害者是水生物，由于水温升高使水中溶解氧减少，水体处于缺氧状态，同时又使水生生物代谢率增高而需要更多的氧，造成一些水生生物在热效力作用下发育受阻或死亡，从而影响环境和生态平衡。此外，河水水温上升给一些致病微生物造成一个人工温床，使它们得以滋生、泛滥，引起疾病流行，危害人类健康。1965年澳大利亚曾流行过一种脑膜炎，后经科学家证实，其祸根是一种变形原由，由于发电厂排出的热水使河水温度增高，这种变形原由在温水中大量孳生，造成水源污染而引起了这次脑膜炎的流行。

③随着人口和耗能量的增长，城市排入大气的热量日益增多。按照热力学定律，人类使用的全部能量终将转化为热，传入大气，逸向太空。这样，使地面反射太阳热能的反射率增高，吸收太阳辐射热减少，沿地面空气的热减少，上升气流减弱，阻碍云雨形成，造成局部地区干旱，影响农作物生长。近一个世纪以来，地球大气中的二氧化碳不断增加，气候变暖，冰川积雪融化，使海水水位上升，一些原本十分炎热的城市，变得更热。专家们预测，如按现在的能源消耗的速度计算，每10年全球温度会升高0．1℃～0．26℃；一个世纪后即为1．0℃～2．6℃，而两极温度将上升3℃～7℃，对全球气候会有重大影响。
