自1900年发现“有字甲骨”至今,搜求或科学发掘共获得甲骨15万片(包括国内外的著录书),但它们分藏或流散于世界各地,难于查阅。早在20世纪50年代,胡厚宣教授就提出编纂《甲骨文合集》的规划,经过众学者的多年的努力,十三册巨著于1984年已经出齐(资料截止1973年)。《合集》材料齐全,在编排上先分为5期:武丁;祖庚、祖甲;廪辛、康丁;武乙、文丁;帝乙、帝辛。每一期中又按内容分为阶级和国家;社会生产;思想文化;其他等4项和21小类,既有一定的研究,又方便于查检。另,1973年,社科院考古研究所又在小屯南地发掘获得7000多片甲骨,其中4511片有刻辞,不遑收入《合集》,另外出版《小屯南地甲骨》(上下册)。这样,除了比较零散的甲骨文献之外,重要的甲骨文史料基本齐全了。
