痛泻要方为土虚木乘，脾受肝制，升降失常所致的痛泻证而设。由于肝强疏泻太过，脾弱运化不及，清阳不升，故肠鸣腹痛，大便泄泻。治宜敛肝柔肝，补脾助运，兼舒调气机，升阳止泻。防风在痛泻要方中少量应用，散肝郁舒脾气，且有胜湿以助止泻之功，又为脾经引经之药，故兼俱佐使之功。
