  最近我到美国去,无意中看到我的女儿文蔷收藏的一个小册,其中有一页是老舍的题字。这是四十多年前的事了,当时老舍和我都住在四川北碚。老舍先是住在林语堂先生所有的一栋小洋房的楼上靠近楼梯的一小间房屋,房间很小,一床一桌,才可容身。他独自一人,以写作自遣。有一次我问他写小说进度如何,他说每天写上七百字,不多写。他身体不大好,患胃下垂,走路微微有些佝偻着腰,脸上显着苍老。他写作的态度十分谨严,一天七百字不是随便写出来的。他后来自己说:“什么字都要想好久。”他的楼下住着老向一家,但是他们彼此往来并不太繁。老舍为人和蔼可亲,平易近人,但是内心却很孤独。

  老舍之死,好久是一个谜。现在不是谜了。他死得惨。他的父亲也死得惨。胡絮青说:八国联军攻入北京城的时候,他父亲死在南长街的一家粮店里。是舅舅家的二哥回来报的信,这个二哥也是旗兵……他败下阵来,路过那家粮店,进去找点水喝,正巧遇见了老舍的父亲。攻打正阳门的八国联军的烧夷弹把父亲身上的火药打燃,全身被烧肿,他自己爬到这个粮店等死。二哥看见他的时候,他已不能说话,遍身焦黑,只把一双因脚肿而脱下的布袜子交给了二哥。后来父亲的小小衣冠冢中埋葬的就是这双袜子。这时老舍不足两岁。

  这段悲惨的家史是天然的小说题材,在老舍的一生中,不管走到哪里,它都一次又一次地回到他的记忆里,勾起他的无限辛酸和义愤。

  老舍父子都是惨死,一死于八国联军,一死于 * * 的爪牙。前者以旗兵身份战死于敌军炮火之下,犹可说也,老舍一介文人,竟也死于邪恶的“文艺黑线专政”论的毒箭之下,真是惨事。我们的了解是,他不是溺死在一个小湖的水里,他是陈尸在一个小湖的岸边。他的尸首很快地火化了,但是他的骨灰盒里没有骨灰!像老舍这样的一个人,一向是平正通达、与世无争,他的思想倾向一向是个人主义者、自由主义者,他的写作一向是属于写实主义,而且是深表同情于贫苦的大众。何况他也因恪于形势而写出不少的歌功颂德的文章,从任何方面讲,他也不应该有他那样的结局。然而,不应该发生的事居然发生了。

  老舍最后一部小说是《正红旗下》。一九八零年六月北京人民文学出版社出版,一四二页,九万七千字。这部小说作于一九六一年底和一九六二年。据胡絮青的代序说,这部小说的遭遇很惨,经过也很曲折。小说以写满人为主,而且是清朝末年的满人,并且是以义和团那个时代的骚动为背景。所以在体裁上当然与所谓“现代体裁”不同。老舍所以敢动笔写这一部早就想写的小说,是因为他以为他已获得允许可以“在一定的大前提之下自由选择体裁”,但是他想错了。一九六二年下半年,起了一阵“现代文字狱妖风”,株连了一大批文艺工作者,“谁愿意莫名其妙地因写小说而被戴上'反党,的大帽子呢?”“这些文艺政策上的不正常现象就构成了《正红旗下》既没写完,又没发表的原因。”……(节选自《槐园梦忆》)
