①挟沙水流进入水库壅水段后(A点),由于水深增加,流速减低,水流中所挟带的泥沙不断向底部沉降,水面的流速与含沙量逐渐趋向于零。

②向底部沉降的泥沙,较粗的部分将就地落淤,形成三角洲淤积;较细的则由于沉降速度小,还能继续保持悬浮状态。

③进到B点以后,表层水开始变清,形成一个明显的清浑水交界面,这时该区段内出现两种比重不同的流体,在重力作用下,潜入底部的水流就有可能携带着所剩下来的悬浮物质,以一定的速度向前运动,形成异重流,如图中的C点。

④由于异重流在向水库区运动的过程中,将带动一部分交界面上的清水相随同行,因而其表层就会出现相反方向的补偿流。这种补偿流的回流将推动水面的漂浮物质向B点附近聚集,这就是水库异重流产生的一个标志。B点通常称为异重流的潜入点,即水库异重流形成和插入库底的潜入点。
