闽县林琴南孝廉纾^①六七岁时，从师读。师贫甚，炊不得米。林知之，亟归，以袜实米，满之，负以致师。师怒，谓其窃，却弗受。林归以告母，母笑曰：“若心固善，然此岂束脩^②之礼？”即呼备赍^③米一石致之塾师乃受。

注：①林琴南孝廉纾(shū)：林纾，字琴南，福建阂县（今福州人）。近代文学家，尤以翻译外国小说名世。孝廉，明清时对举人的称呼。②束脩：本指十条干肉，后来通常指学生拜师或亲友之间赠送的礼物。③赍（jī）：携带。
