汉字的优点是否即是一切象形文字的优点呢笔者认为,汉字决非仅仅是象形文字。汉字不仅具象(象形),而且有想象(形声、会意、转注)和抽象(指事、假借)。古人的“六书”法则早就指出了这一点。汉字是兼具象、想象与抽象三者为一体的艺术化文字。这恰恰道出了汉字永存于世的最根本的奥秘。古埃及的象形文字和两河流域的楔形文字正因为缺少了这一点,从而变成了人类历史文明陈迹。汉字从它被创造的第一天起,就不仅是信息运载的工具,也是中国人赋予美感的艺术创作对象。世界上恐怕找不到第二个民族(学习汉字的日本人等除外)像中国人这样,把书写自己民族的文字当作民族最崇高的艺术创作来对待。中国人的汉字书法,从甲骨文起,每一次字体的嬗变,都伴随着艺术美感的集约化过程。正是这种过程,逐渐造就了汉字的信息“集装箱”功能。换言之,是中国人对美感的无穷无尽的追求引领着民族文字的进化和发展。这一点很重要,因为实际上人类文明也是由人类的美感引导着向前进化和发展的。这是一个深刻的人性的真理。
中国的汉字书法是一门从具象出发,而兼及想象和抽象的综合性视觉艺术,他给予人们的美感不仅是崇高、和谐。自由,而是集崇高、和谐、自由于一体的温柔敦厚、安定平和、淡泊隽永。一幅好的书法作品值得人们欣赏的是它的艺术品位、风味和韵味。味道离不开作品,也无不与作者的人品、文品具有千丝万缕的牵连。纵览古来的书法名家,很少有仅以书技名世者,钟张二王、欧虞颜柳、苏黄米蔡,赵董文祝,不是朝廷名臣,便是文坛名将。书法艺术的品位紧紧与人品、文品关联。如同汉字的贵族气,或言精英气更恰当,不过,这种精英气也极易变成庸人气。在这里,高雅与低俗,往往在乎人。正因此,中国书法艺术有别于雕塑、绘画、音乐等再现自然美感的艺术,而是具有浓厚的人性美感、自我表现意味的艺术。人们通常说,书如其人,字如其人,这是极有道理的。写字不仅判断人,更能培育人,这与书法艺术的综合特点分不开。笔者认为,书法的美育价值更甚于它的审美价值,极有利于综合开发儿童(乃至成人)的空间具象、运动(时间、速度)想象和符号抽象的直觉能力,从而极有利于全面地调动人类感官和大脑两半球的智慧和潜能。
