陈襄,字述古,侯官人也。学者称为古灵先生。是时,学者方溺于雕篆之文,相高以词华。先生独有志于传道,与其同里周希孟者为友,气古行高,以天下之重为己任。闻者始皆笑之,先生不为动,躬行益笃,学者亦稍稍化之,多从之游,虽有诞突恣傲不可率者,不敢失礼于其门。

以进士为浦城簿,县缺令,先生行令事,断狱明决,人莫能干以私。首兴学宫,为诸生讲学,从之者五百余人。部使者安积至其县,先生以十事陈之,安是之,皆为施行。迁为仙居令,仙居山县,莫知学,先生之兴学宫、课诸生如浦城。有问难者,得乘先生听讼之暇,入问于庭。偶出行部,遇山谷中有小学,辄下车为童子辈讲经。从学者渐多。迁著作佐郎、知河阳县,仙居之民攀车遮道,徒以行,几不得出境。
