Good evening ladies and gentlemen! It’s our pleasure to have you as our guests here this evening. The title of this evening’s lecture is transatlantic futures. I think that there’s no doubt that there is a special relationship between the UK and the US, that relationship, which has its foundations in two nations that are traditional allies and very strong trading partners, is being debated and written about all the time.
I suspect more so now than has been the case for many years. That relationship seems to vary in its texture with various changes in political leadership in the two countries and occasionally there are strains in the relationship. I think there is always something constant in the relationship between the UK and the US, even if it is the often observed reality that here you have two nations that are divided by a common language.
