有人记下一条逸事,说,历史学家陈寅恪曾对人说过,他年轻时去见历史学家夏曾佑,那位老人对他说:“你能读外国书,很好;我只能读中国书,都读完了,没得读了。”他当时很惊讶,以为那位学者老糊涂了。等到自己也老了时,他才觉得那话有点道理:中国古书不过是那几十种,是读得完的。

文化不是杂乱无章而是有结构、有系统的。过去的书也应是有条理的,可以理出一个头绪的。两位老学者为什么说中国古书不过几十种,是读得完的呢显然他们是看出了古书间的关系,发现了其中的头绪、结构、系统。只就书籍而言,总有些书是绝大部分的书的基础,离开了这些书,其他书就无所依附,因为书籍和文化一样总是累积起来的。因此,我想,有些不依附其他而为其他所依附的书应当是少不了的必读书,或者说必备的知识基础。举例说,只读过《红楼梦》可以说是知道一点《红楼梦》,若只读“红学”著作,不论如何博大精深,说来头头是道,却没有读过《红楼梦》,那只能算是知道别人讲的《红楼梦》。读《红楼梦》也不能只读“脂批”,不看原文。所以《红楼梦》就是一切有关它的书的基础。

如果这种看法还有点道理,我们就可以依此类推。若照这样来看中国古书,那就有头绪了。首先是所有写古书的人,或古代读书人,必须读那些不依附其他而为其他所依附的书,不然就不能读懂堆在那上面的无数古书,包括小说、戏曲。

这样的书就是《易》《诗》《书》《春秋》《礼记》《论语》《孟子》《荀子》《老子》《庄子》。①这十部书若不知道,②唐朝的—韩愈、宋朝的朱熹、明朝的五计仁(阳明)的书都无法读,③连《镜花缘》《红楼梦》《西厘记》《牡丹亭》里许多词句和用意也难以体会。这不是提倡复古、读经,为了扫荡封建残余非反对读经不可,但为了理解封建文化又非读经不可。

以上是算总账,再下去,分类区别就比较容易了。举例来说,读史书,可先后齐读,至少要读《史记》《资治通鉴》,加上《续资治通鉴》《文献通考》。读文学书总要先读第一部总集《文选》。如不略读《文选》,就不知道唐以前文学从屈原的《离骚》起是怎么一回事,也就看不出以后的发展。

中国的书不必每人每书全读,例如《礼记》中的有些篇目,《史记》中的《表》《书》,《文献通考》中的资料,就不是供人“读”的,可以“溜”览过去。这样算来,把这些书通看一遍,花不了多少时间,不用“皓首”即可“穷经”。依此类推,若想知道某一国的书本文化,例如印度、日本,也可以先读其本国人历来受教育时的必读书。孩子们和青少年看得快,“正课”别压得太重,考试莫逼得太紧,给点“业余”时间,让他们多少了解一点中外一百年前的书本文化的大意并非难事。有这些作基础,和历史、哲学史、文学史之类的“简编”配合起来,就不是“空谈无根”、心中无把握了,也可以说是学到诸葛亮的“观其大略”的“法门”了。花费比“三冬”多一点的时间,也可以说是“文史足用”了。没有史和概论是不能入口韵,但光有史和概论而未见原书,那好像是看照片甚至漫画去想象本人了。本文开头那两位老前辈说的“书读完了”的意思大概也就是“本人”都认识了,其他不过是肖像画而已,多看少看无关大体了。
