参考答案:Topic A:The Harder I Work.The Luckier I Get
—Do you think that some people are always luckier than others
—Yes.sometimes I do have this kind of feeling actually, but there must be some hidden reason behind their luck I think.
—What do you think the hidden reason is Because I often hear much talk about the unfairness of God since he has gifted some people with more luck than others upon birth.
—It is not the case at all.You know luck is in effect the probability of somebody’s getting more opportunities.
—But there do exist the fact that some people are always given more chances in interviews, lottery and so on.
—What you referred to as“more”is only a term viewed from an absolute perspective. They are given more opportunities just because they work harder:they try more even after failures of many times. But usually people will neglect the failures they have experienced and the great effort they have taken. So COllleS people’s impression of their being given more opportunities.
—Your reason doesn’t seem to be quite convincing. You know some people are also hard-working and persistent, but they are unable to get as many opportunities. That’s a counter-proof for your idea.
—Not at all.Notice what I mean here by“work harder”.“Work hard”doesn’t necessarily mean more time or energy put into some work, but to do it efficiently and properly with the right method. If you are going in the opposite direction, then the harder you work, the more unfortunate you will become.
—NOW I see.Let me conclude your ideas please.Luck will never come from nowhere. It’s a result of one’s hard work. If you work harder, try more and learn more, you will have more chances of being given an opportunity. Then you will become luckier in other’s eyes. If you work hard without becoming any luckier, it’s time you amended your method.
—Exactly!
Topic B: Why Sports Are Popular
—What do you do in your spare time I mean what you often do for relaxation.
—Well, mostly I do some sports for a rest from my heavy work in the office.
—You’re doing what most other people are doing for fun too. What kind of sports are you doing
—Jogging, swimming, playing badminton, table tennis, football and all the other forms of sports that I could manage.
—Eh, you seem to be quite an active sportsman. Actually today the workload is very heavy for all of us and we all need a good rest after work. Sports, another form of hard work has become even popular.
—No doubt it will. They are popular because they are another form of labor — physical labor which requires people’s contribution of physical energy. We need physical exercises because most of our work is brainwork, sitting in the chair all day like potatoes in the oven, accumulating stress inside the body. Day after day, the accumulated stress will cause trouble in our body function, over-weight, cancer, heart disease and so on.
—It sounds so frightening. What most people know about the popularity of sports is that they could exercise our bodies and keep us in good shape. But the most important function of sports is it’s ability to reduce the chances of developing fatal diseases.
—You are right! But the benefits of sports don’t stop at a physical sense. They can also improve the functionality of our brain.
—Yeah. With physical exercise, our brain could take in more oxygen to refresh itself. And during the process of movement, the heart’s function to pump blood will be more efficient. All this could make not only the mind but all parts of the body more active and energetic.
—There’s another aspect of the advantages of sports — the spirits embodies in sports competition. Modem world is one with fierce competitions. Through sports competitions people could build up their ambition for being the best one.
—I doubt if this could be referred to as an advantage at all.
