人体的经络系统由经脉、络脉及其连属部分组成。经脉是经络系统的主干,主要有正经、经别和奇经三大类。正经有十二,故又称"十二正经"或"十二经脉",包括手三阴经、足三阴经、手三阳经、足三阳经。经别,是从十二经脉别出的正经,又称"十二经别"。奇经有八条,即督脉、任脉、冲脉、带脉、阴跷脉、阳跷脉、阴维脉、阳维脉,合称为"奇经八脉"。

络脉是经脉的小分支,有别络、浮络、孙络之分。别络是络脉中较大者,具有加强十二经脉相为表里的两经之间在体表的联系。孙络,是最细小的络脉,属络脉的再分支,分布全身,难以计数。浮络,是循行于人体浅表部位,"浮而常见"的络脉。
