Today, Bill Gates is the richest man in the world, but not long ago the richest man was the Sultan of

Brunei. Brunei is a tiny nation on the northwest coast of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It has been among the

richest countries in the world since oil was discovered there in 1929.

Sultan of Brunei, the nation's leader, inherited (继承) $40 billion from his father in 1967. At that time,

he was reported to have more wealth than anyone else .By 2000, however, Sultan was estimated to be

worth only $10 billion.

Much of the money has been used to help the people of Brunei, by providing them with free or cheap

public services, The 300000 people of that nation today enjoy free health care, education, and even a free

amusement park like Disneyland. People living in remote villages in the southwest of the country can get

free health care from the nation's Flying Medical Services.

ports. The main seaport of Muara, which is about 28 kilometers to the northeast of the capital city Bandar

Seri Begawan, can take up to 7 or 8 ships at the same time. Since 1974,Brunei has also had its own airline,
