Part-time Work with Exchange Students

YOUTH International is a non-profit high school foreign exchange student organization. We welcome teenagers from over 80 countries worldwide and provide host families. The Community Representative (代表)is a part-time position designed for people with a strong desire to do something rewarding in the community and earn some extra money.

Applicants(申请人) best suited for this work should enjoy teenagers, have a strong interest in cross-cultural communication, and feel comfortable networking. Full training and support will be provided through branch offices throughout the U.S Positions available in most states.

Hi, I’m an ESL student in China. I’m 20, quiet and polite, and I speak reasonable English. I am looking for a summer job in an English-speaking country. 粥里春秋

    刚刚懂事,读过几年私塾的父亲就一字一顿地教我牢记:“一粥一饭,当思来处不易;半丝半缕,恒念物力维艰。”还多次让我跟着他高声朗诵《悯农》:“锄禾日当午,汗滴禾下土。谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦。”    

     念是念了,也歌唱式地朗诵了,其实只是挂在嘴上而已。年龄稍大以后,特别是亲眼目睹了村民们为了粮食所付出的艰辛劳动,才逐渐掂出这些格言和诗句的分量。     

     三月播种。一家人随着东方的第一缕霞光早早起身,把冒出娇嫩芽尖的稻种,小心翼翼地均匀地撒在秧床上。     

     四月插秧。辽阔的原野上,一方又一方的水田镜子般平整,倒映着蓝天白云,使人恍然觉得,那些身手矫健的插秧女是把碧绿的秧苗栽插在青天之上。     

     五月,六月,七月。     

     追肥,拔草,治虫。     

     高温悄悄来了,村民们像照料子女一样侍候庄稼,不怕苦,不怕累,只要庄稼长得好,就喜笑颜开,心满意足。天热闷人,他们说:“好!不冷不热,五谷不结呀!”双腿被蚊虫叮得奇痒难忍,被蚂蟥吸得鲜血淋漓,他们只是笑笑。终于,稻谷一天比一天饱满了,远远望去,一眼望不到边的稻田逐渐变得金光闪烁,气象万千。    

    村民们不辞劳苦种植粮食的过程,使自幼在农村长大的我印象深刻,而村民们对粮食无比珍惜的情景,更是让我终身难忘!邻居房大伯,每当新谷登场,他最爱的是先煮一锅新米粥细细品尝。他喝粥时的陶醉神态,使人觉得,他喝的不是粥,而是人间难得一见的美食。更难忘的是,一碗粥喝罢,他要仔仔细细地把碗舔得千干净净,不留一丝粥液,那碗便如水洗过一般。     

    第一次见房大伯舔碗,我很以为怪,回家告诉父亲,父亲神情庄重地说:“你记住,这就叫‘谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦’。”     

    此生见粥多矣!最难忘的是那个全民饥饿的年代,村民们被指示拆灶砸锅,全部到大食堂吃饭。那时家家断炊烟,户户无鸡鸣,食堂每天只供应两顿粥。分粥时,两名服务人员一人用大铁铲在一个大缸内不停地搅拌,让沉在缸底的少得可怜的米粒浮上来,另一人负责往满脸饥饿的村民碗里舀粥。说是粥,其实是稀汤,碗里的米粒屈指可数……但是,在饥饿面前,人与人之间却显现出相濡以沫的真情。那时,我们大学生里多数男生到月底总要饿一两顿,甚至一两天。这时,早就留心的女同学会伸出援助之手:“呶,我这儿有吃不完的饭票,给你们……”面对桌上小小的一卷饭票,男生们推来让去:“我不饿!我不饿!”饭票往往被硬塞到最瘦弱的男生手里。其实,她们哪里是“吃不完”?他们哪里会“不饿”?这盘中粒粒,又岂止是普通的生活小事?     

    我庆幸我的儿孙们赶上衣食无忧一天比一天幸福的时代。单就米粥来说,什么八宝粥、银耳绿豆粥、莲子荷叶粥等等,花样翻新,名目繁多。我仍然固执地要求我的儿孙们什么时候都不可忘记古训!儿孙们接受了我的意见,并付诸日常生活中。那一天,我见到正上小学三年级的孙儿,在饭桌上严肃地批评刚上小学的录女:“提醒你多少次了,你总是改不了到处丢饭粒的毛病!不是刚背过唐诗吗,‘谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦’啊!”     

    我听后欣慰地笑了,笑着,笑着,却又不知怎的忽然间热泪盈眶…… (选自《文人品粥》,有删改)
