以现代医学的观点说,潜水病就是“氮过量病”。在常规气压环境下,人体内部组织液中溶解着饱和量的氮。这些气体的溶解量将随着外界的压力变化而出现波动。压力大,体液能溶解的氮就多,反之则少。当外界压力降低,溶解进体液的氮气就会被释放出来。一般来说,我们能通过呼吸,从肺部将这些多余的氮气吐出去。但是一旦外界压力降低的速度过快,一定时间内体液中的氮来不及通过肺离开身体,它们就会从体液中分离,形成气泡。这些极微小的气泡首先会出现在肌肉关节等部位,影响局部的组织健康,产生类似关节炎或者是肌肉发炎的一系列病痛。当气泡越来越多,血液系统中就会出现大量小气泡融合成的大气泡,形成气体堵塞血管。一旦脑血管被堵塞,患者就有瘫痪甚至死亡的危险。
