  1965年,我在西雅图景岭学校图书馆担任管理员。一天,有同事推荐一个四年级学生来图书馆帮忙,并说这个孩子聪颖好学。

  不久,一个瘦小的男孩来了,我先给他讲了图书分类法,然后让他把已归还图书馆却放错了位的图书放回原处。

  小男孩问:“像是当侦探吗?”我回答:“那当然。”接着,男孩不遗余力在书架的迷宫中穿来插去,午休时,他已找出三本放错地方的图书。

  第二天他来得更早,而且更不遗余力。干完一天的活后,他正式请求我让他担任图书管理员。又过了两星期,他突然邀请我上他家做客。吃晚餐时,孩子母亲告诉我他们要搬家了,到附近一个住宅区。孩子听说转校却担心:“我走了谁来整理那些站错队的书呢?”

  我一直记挂着他。但没过多久,他又在我的图书馆门口出现了。并欣喜地告诉我,那边的图书馆不让学生干,妈妈把他转回我们这边来上学,由他爸爸用车接送。“如果爸爸不带我,我就走路来。”

  其实,我当时心里便应该有数,这小家伙决心如此坚定,必定可为天下不可为之事,我可没想到他会成为信息时代的天才,微软电脑公司大亨、美国首富——比尔·盖茨。
