More good things come from small things

About a year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me.

每一只小狗都有一个目标

①有一对夫妇,有两个孩子,这对夫妇决定为孩子养一只小狗。小狗抱回来以后,他们就请朋友帮忙训练这只小狗。在第一次训练前,女驯狗师问:“小狗的目标是什么?”夫妻俩面面相觑,很是意外,嘟囔着说:“一只小狗的目标?当然就是当一只狗了。”他们实在想不出狗还有什么另外的目标。女驯狗师极为严肃地摇了摇头说:“每只小狗都有一个目标。”夫妻俩商量之后,为小狗确立了一个目标:白天和孩子们一道玩,夜里看家。后来,小狗被成功地训练成了孩子的好朋友和家的守护神。这对夫妇牢牢地记住了这句话——做一只狗要有目标,更何况是做一个人。

②我们常常把别人的期待当成了自己的目标。孩童时,这几乎是顺理成章的。但是,你会渐渐地长大,无论别人的期望是怎样的美好,它也不属于你。除非有一天,你成功地在自己的心底移植了这个期望,这个期望生根发芽,长成了你的目标。那时,尽管所有的枝叶都和原来的母体一脉相承,但其实它已面目全非,它的灵魂完完全全只属于你,它被你的血脉所滋养。

③我们常常把世俗的流转当成自己的目标。这一阵子崇尚钱,你就把挣钱当成自己的目标,殊不知钱只是手段而非目标,有了钱之后,事情远远没有结束,把钱当成目标,就是把叶子当成了根。过一阵流行美丽,你就把制造美丽保存美丽当成了目标,殊不知美丽的标准有所不同,美丽是可以变化的,目标却是相对恒定的。美丽之后你还要做什么?美丽会褪色,目标却永远鲜艳。

④有人把快乐和幸福当成了终极目标,我觉得这也值得推敲。快乐并不只是单纯的快感,类乎饮食和繁殖的本能。科学家通过研究,发现最长远最持久的快乐,来自于你的自我价值的体现,而毫无疑问,自我价值是从属于你的目标,一个连目标都没有的人,何谈价值呢!

⑤一株树的目标也许是雕成大厦的栋梁,也许是撑起一把绿伞送人阴凉,也许是化做无数张白纸传递知识,也许是制成一次性筷子让人大快朵颐……还有数不清的可能,我们不是树,我们不可能穷尽也不可能明白树的心思。我们是人,我们可以为自己确立一个目标,这是做人的本分之一。

⑥有一位女子曾说过,出名要趁早。我看,确立目标要趁早。
