象犀珠玉怪珍之物,有悦于人之耳目,而不适于用。金石草木丝麻五谷六材,有适于用,而用之则弊,取之则竭。悦于人之耳目,而适于用;用之而不弊,取之而不竭;贤不肖之所得,各因其才;仁智之所见,各随其分;才分不同,而求无不获者,惟书乎!

自孔子圣人,其学必始于观书。当是时,惟周之柱下史老聃为多书。韩宣子适鲁,然后见《易象》与《鲁春秋》。季札聘于上国,然后得闻《诗》之风、雅、颂。而楚独有左史倚相,能读《三坟》《五典》《八索》《九丘》。士之生于是时,得见《六经》者盖无几,其学可谓难矣。而皆习于礼乐,深于道德,非后世君子所及。

自秦汉以来,作者益众,纸与字画日趋于简便,而书益多,世莫不有,然学者益以苟简,何哉?余犹及见老儒先生,自言其少时,欲求《史记》《汉书》而不可得,幸而得之,皆手自书,日夜诵读,惟恐不及。近岁市人转相摹刻,诸子百家之书,日传万纸,学者之于书,多且易致如此,其文辞学术,当倍蓰于昔人,而后生科举之士,皆束书不观,游谈无根,此又何也?

余友李公择,少时读书于庐山五老峰下白石庵之僧舍。公择既去,而山中之人思之,指其所居为“李氏山房”。藏书凡九千余卷。公择既已涉其流,探其源,采剥其华实,而咀嚼其膏味,以为己有,发于文词,见于行事,以闻于当世矣。而书固自如也,未尝少损。将以遗来者供其无穷之求而各足其才分之所当得是以不藏于家而藏于其故所居之僧舍此仁者之心也。
