我7岁还没上学,不识字也不识数,当然更不会算账。村里人说我是个傻二小。

有一年,我家的斜对面开了一家小小的杂货铺,卖针头线脑、纸张文具,也卖些吃的喝的。掌柜的是我的本家赵泰爷爷,一个很斯文的白胡子老头。开张那天,他先放了两挂鞭炮,然后在大门上贴了一副鲜红的对联。我问他这对子上写的什么,他告诉我,上联是“有酒今日醉”,下联是“没钱你别来”。我问他啥意思,他说,傻二小,回家问你爹去吧!

回到家里,我把那副对联给爹念出来了,问爹这是啥意思。

爹是农民,满头黄尘,一脸汗水。抽了一袋旱烟后爹说,二小,他那副对子一是鼓动人们买他的东西,手里有钱要舍得花;二是说他做买卖不赊账,没钱别进他的铺子。爹说赵泰这个人虽然识文断字,可是很小气,很抠,财迷脑瓜。爹还说他应该有个“不赊不欠”的横批!

爹说对了,不一会儿赵泰爷爷就把横批贴出来了,只不过是“概不赊欠”!我很佩服爹的智慧和眼光,尽管爹一字不识。爹笑着告诫我,你这个爷爷把一枚钱看得比磨盘还重,可别去买他的东西,小心糊弄你!

那天我们家里来了客人,爹要点火做饭时,突然发现没了洋火(火柴)。爹不敢怠慢和冷落亲戚,就交给我两毛钱,让我去买洋火。爹告诉我二分钱一盒洋火,买三盒,剩下的钱一分也不能花,要如数拿回来。爹说了这么几句,让我赶紧跑着去。

进了赵泰爷爷的铺子时,那位白胡子老头正趴在柜台上噼里啪啦打算盘。他头戴一顶瓜皮帽,身穿一件蓝布长衫,鼻梁上架了一副眼镜,比学校的老师还显得有文化、有尊严。他把算盘推到一边,俯下身来摸着我的头说,人家别的孩子都上学了,你为什么不上?我说,爷爷,我不识数!他说,你小子不上学,不就越来越笨吗?我说,爹不让我上学,说掏不起书钱!他说,你爹糊涂!掏不起书钱不会借?他还让你当一辈子傻二小呀?他猛地把柜台一拍,短见,你爹真正是短见!

赵泰爷爷的脸红了,雪白的胡子也抖动起来。他坐下去歇息一阵才问我买什么,身上带了多少钱。他很认真地告诉我,洋火是二分钱一盒,三盒,用乘法算,二乘以三得八。你身上带着两毛钱,用减法算,两毛减去八分,我应该再找给你一毛钱。你听明白了吗?听不明白,回家问你爹去!我一点也不明白,他一会儿乘法一会儿减法,我的脑袋早大了。

那天晚上,爹好一阵激动,好一番感慨,好一番叹息!

爹先是批评赵泰爷爷,这个赵泰,想钱想疯了吧?不顾仁义道德,不看同宗同家,光天化日之下欺负我们,他的良心呢?他可真会打算盘哪!一盒洋火二分钱,三盒应该是六分钱,从哪里跑出来的二乘以三得八啊?两毛钱减去六分钱应该是一毛四分钱,他多收了咱们四分钱。四分钱是个小数吗?两盒洋火呀!

爹接着批评我,你真是个傻二小!你就不会算一算?木头啊你!  

昏黄的油灯下,爹流泪了。他的泪水掉下来,砸得桌面啪啪响。

我说,爹,那你找他去,让他把钱退回来!

爹说,他是我的长辈,我怎么去找他呀?他财迷脑瓜,他会耍手段,他要是不认账呢?撕破了脸面,吵闹起来,岂不让人笑话?罢罢罢,忍了吧,和为贵。你明天上学去吧,爹给你借钱去!

第二天我就上学了。我发现我不笨,老师教的字,我都会写;老师讲的话,我都能记住。

一天傍晚,赵泰爷爷穿着那件长衫到我家里来了。爹礼貌地接待了他,给他递了一袋烟,端了一碗水。他对爹说,听说你让二小上学啦?爹说,是呀,没钱我可以借,我们不能再受别人的欺负啦!爷爷笑了,你忙吧,我走啦!爹说,我这可是被人逼的呀!

赵泰爷爷走后,爹在水碗底下发现了四分钱!爹的手一抖,碰洒了那碗还在冒着热气的水。

爹是在30多年之后去世的,那时候我在报社做记者。临终前爹对我说,二小,你还记得你赵泰爷爷吗?那个白胡子老头,在咱们村开杂货铺子的?我说,记得,记得很清楚呢!
