1945年,我的外祖父是一名木匠。有一天,他正在赶着做一批板条箱,那是教堂用来装衣服运到中国去救助孤儿的。干完活回家的路上,外祖父伸手到他的衬衫口袋里去摸他的眼镜,突然发现眼镜不见了。他在脑子里把他这一天做过的事情重放了一遍,然后他意识到发生了什么,在他不注意的时候,眼镜从他衬衫的口袋里滑了出去,掉进了其中一只他正在钉钉子的板条箱里。他崭新的眼镜就这样漂洋过海去了中国。
当时,美国正值大萧条时期,外祖父要养活6个孩子,生活非常困难。而那副眼镜,是那天早上他刚花了20美元买来的。他为要重新买一副眼镜烦恼不堪。 “这不公平”,在沮丧的回家途中,他嘀咕道,“上帝啊,我一向对你忠诚,把我的时间和金钱都奉献给你,可是现在,你看——”
半年后,抗日战争胜利,中国那所孤儿院的院长——一位美国传教士, 回美国度假。在一个星期天,他来到外祖父所在的这所芝加哥的小教堂。他一开始热诚地感谢了那些援助过孤儿的人们,“但最重要的是”,他说,“我必须感谢去年你们送给我的那副眼镜。大家知道, 日本人扫荡了孤儿院,毁坏了所有的东西,包括我的眼镜。我当时已经绝望了,就算我有钱,在当时也没有办法重新配一副眼镜。由于眼睛看不清楚,我开始天天头痛,我和我的同事天天祈祷着能有一副眼镜出现。然后你们的箱子就运到了。 当我的同事打开箱盖时,他们发现一副眼镜躺在那些衣服上。”
院长停顿了许久,好让自己的话音降低一些。然后,带着众人的悬念,他继续道:“各位乡亲,当我带上那副眼镜,我发现它就像是为我度身定做的一样!我的世界顿时清晰,头也不痛了。我要感谢你们,是你们为我做了这一切!”
