       我认为自己的前途很暗淡，因为，我既然被凶猛的风暴完全刮出了原定的航线，远离人类贸易航线好几百海里以外，流落到这个荒岛上，那么，我就有充分的理由认为这是老天爷的意思，要我在这个孤零零地地方，在这种孤独凄凉的情况下度过我的余生。一想到这些，我的眼泪就不由得夺眶而出。有时我会发生疑问，为什么苍天要这样作践他所造出的生灵，害得他这样不幸，这样孤立无援，这样沮丧无聊，以致使人找不出理由对这种生活产生感谢的感情？

       可是，每当我这样想的时候，就有另外一种力量出来阻止我这种想法，责备我。特别是有一天，我带着枪在海边散步，寻思着我目前的处境的时候，我的理智就用反面的理由来劝解我。“不错，你现在处境很孤寂，一点不假，可是请你想想，还有同你一起的那些人，他们都往哪儿去了？你们一同上小船的，不是11个人吗？那10人往哪里去了？为什么他们都没有保住生命，只剩下你？是这里好呢，还是那里好？”我指着海面说。当我们遇到坏事的时候，我们应当考虑到其中包含的好事，同时也应当考虑到更坏的情况。

       于是我又想到，我这时候拥有的维持生活的东西，是多么充足。万一那只船没有从搁浅的地方浮起来，漂到海边，让我有时间把那些东西取出来，我又该怎样？假定我现在还像我初上岸的时候一样，没有一点生活必须品，我的情形又会怎么样？“特别是，”我大声对自己说，“如果我没有一杆枪，没有弹药，没有制造物品的工具，没有衣服、没有卧具、帐篷，或任何遮羞的东西，我又怎么办呢？”可是现在，这些东西相当充足，即使将来我的弹药用完了，还是可以活下去的。我相信我这一生是不会有冻饿之虞的，因为我老早就考虑到怎样预防意外的事故，考虑到将来的日子，不但考虑到我的弹药用完以后的情况，甚至想到我的身体衰弱以后的情况。
