  县城东南三十里,过去有一块极好的风水宝地,依山傍水,地脉充盈。

  此地曾为一郭姓人独占,盖了许多宅院,方圆几百里无人不知、无人不晓。不晓得底细的人以为这一定是官宦之家,而且不会小于四品。

  实则不然。

  此宅的主人,论身份是很不显眼、很不够份的,甚至可以说是十分卑微的——给一位当朝大人当阍人。

  阍人便是看门的,此人还干些拉马坠镫的活儿。

  一个阍人何以发迹?

  别小觑了这角色,相府的丫环大过七品的官。莫说黎民百姓,就是带些衔儿的,要见大人也很不容易。“大人不在家。”阍人一句话掷过来,就是闭门羹。谁敢闯进去,你吃了熊心,吞了豹胆?于是先得打点阍人。阍人将打点的银两不动声色地往袖中一掖,公事公办地道:“待我禀报老爷。”结果,便也蔚成风气。尔后,又有打点多少之分,多的自然捷足先登。

  奴才本来是穷人,过惯了紧日子,极为俭省。平素吃穿皆是府上供应,又无甚嗜好,花什么钱?便将收来的钱攒下,碎银一多就兑成整的。然后,找个机会送到乡下家中放债,又不断地生出一些。

  日子不可长计,慢慢地,奴才积了很大的数目。这时,他也年过半百,便告老还乡。大人念其几十年如一日忠心不二,又格外地多赏。

  奴才早有心置买田产,早托心腹之人选中一块风水宝地,又早请先生查勘过了。奴才便买下了,红红火火地大兴土木,费时八年告竣。

  从此,奴才摇身一变,威风凛凛,有了老爷的气派。

  又是几年过去。

  奴才原先的大人也到了告退的年纪。经皇上恩准,回家颐养天年。大人祖居江左,一路聊作散淡之人,游山玩水,十分地惬意。

  一日,恰巧到了奴才庄园。

  大人不知,以为地方官绅,或朝中同僚。便打发下人打听,以便小憩,或者叙旧。

  下人回来后向大人禀道,这片庄园极不寻常,是大人昔日的奴才所居。大人即道:

  “传我的话,说我来了。”

  一时,大门张灯,二门结彩,笙乐齐鸣。奴才亲率家人奴仆,匍匐道边迎候。

  进了庄园。大人边看边叹:好个奴才!

  宅院共起九处,连成一气,又各自成局。梁楹节税,飞檐斗拱,金碧辉煌。堂上陈设,几屏耀眼,光可鉴人。各房皆朱帘翠幕,兰麝流香。奴才房内,雕檩为床,床有锦被。几上置珠玑古玩,琳琅满目。壁上皆古今名士字画。有花园三座,良田千顷。昔日奴才,丫环仆从成群,纳三房小妾,皆二八妹丽。食则盘行素鳞、络绎八珍,豪奢如京都望族。奴辈皆呼昔日奴才“老爷”。

  大人捻羞胡须,笑吟吟道:“不想你如此造化!”

  “回大人,”奴才拜倒,诚惶诚恐,“奴才全仰仗大人恩典,托大人齐天的洪福,奴才方能有今天。”

  奴才又跪前一步:“大人若不嫌奴才寒舍简陋,请大人小住几日,奴才再孝敬大人一回。”

  “我知道你过得不错,很高兴,很高兴的,”大人捻着胡须,笑吟吟道,“不打算住了。”

  大人吩咐即刻启程。

  奴才马上唤大轿侍候。

  列队为大人送行者百人之众。

  “不,我要骑马。”

  大人摆摆手,又捻羞胡须,笑吟吟道。

  奴才连忙叫人备马。马备好了,奴才颐指下人充当上马之阶。下人即趋前几步,伏于马肚之侧,恭候大人上马。

  大人并不动身,只以眼瞥奴才。

  奴才顿悟,踉跄往前,替换了下人,毕恭毕敬跪了:“请老大人上马!”

  奴才的头深深垂下,一把花白胡子抖颤颤扫住了尘埃。

  大人踩稳了奴才的脊梁,跨上马鞍,轻放缰绳,徐行而去……

  良久,奴才没有爬起,爬起来便病倒。

The Commission is expected to propose allowing people to choose which legal jurisdiction they would come under, based on their (1) or their residency.
