（1）成吉思汗是一部落首领，他组织了一支强大军队，多年征战，打败周围各部，统一蒙古；1206年蒙古贵族召开大会，推举他为大汗，尊称为成吉思汗，建立蒙古国。（2）忽必烈于1271年定国号为元，次年定都大都；1276年，元军占领临安，俘虏南宋皇帝，南宋灭亡，统一全国。重视农业发展治理黄河，使北方经济得到恢复发展；开凿二段运河，连通原有运河，使南粮直达大都，促进南北交通和经济交流；还开通了南北海运线；实行行省制，加强对全国统治，尤其加强对西藏和琉球的管辖。

Man first appeared on earth about 2 million years ago. Then he was little more than an animal; but early man had a big advantage over the animals. He had in his brain special groups of nerve cells, not present in animals, that enabled him to invent a language and use it to communicate with his fellow men. 46) This ability to speak was of great value because it allowed men to share ideas, and to plan together, so that tasks impossible for a single person could be successfully undertaken by intelligent team-work.
