  Thomas Stevens was born at Great Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England,

on December 24,1854. In 1871 he went to the USA.He left Oakland, California

in 1884 on a Columbia Standard and became the first person to ride a bicycle

around the world. More than one-third of the route(路线) had to be walked. He

traveled for 83 1/2 days and couldn't travel for 20 days because ofwet weather,

etc., so it took him 103 1/2 days to get to Boston. The distance is about 3700

miles. He followed the old California trail  (踪迹) that most of the way across

the plains and mountains, meeting with many strange and interesting things. Mr.

Stevens got to Boston in August, and then he arrived in New York, where he

hoped to make arrangements which could help him to finish the journey around

the world.
